Salir del Clóset: Queer Trauma/Queer Love

This video art piece/experimental documentary portrays experiences of fabulation related to “coming out” stories from the past reimagined in the present with the hope of opening our futures. As a trans non-binary queer of color, I always felt that I needed to choose between being Latinx or being queer. My “coming-out” story, as for many of us, is sad and left a wound in my heart. How can you heal stories in a humble amount by retelling and reimagining what would have happened (I am echoing Saidiya Hartman’s work among others)? What would it be like to perform scenes about my past that then get re-played as I wish I would have them? What would it be to do that for other queers of color? The piece would use Theory of the Oppressed methodologies and spiritual healing “reenactment” to offer performance where we get to reimagine our past looking towards a different future. Unexpected sci-fi bits and pieces and performance poetry weave the story of Jessica Peña, Jesús Valles, César I. ÁLvarez and M. Yoalli Rodríguez.

Esta obra de videoarte / documental experimental retrata experiencias de fabulación relacionadas con historias de “salir del closet” del pasado reinventadas en el presente con la esperanza de abrir nuestro futuro. Como trans no binario queer de color, siempre sentí que tenía que elegir entre ser latinx o queer. Mi historia de “salir del closet”, como la de muchos de nosotros, es triste y dejó una herida en mi corazón. ¿Cómo puedes curar historias en una cantidad humilde volviendo a contar y reinventar lo que hubiera sucedido (Estoy haciendo eco del trabajo de Saidiya Hartman, entre otros)? ¿Cómo sería realizar escenas de mi pasado que luego son re-interpretadas como me gustaría que se han ellos? ¿Qué sería hacer eso por otros queers de color? La pieza utilizaría las metodologías de la Teoría de los Oprimidos y la “recreación” de curación espiritual para ofrecer una actuación en la que podamos reimaginar nuestro pasado mirando hacia un futuro diferente. Piezas inesperadas de ciencia ficción y poesía escénica tejen la historia de Jessica Peña, Jesús Valles, César I. ÁLvarez y M. Yoalli Rodríguez.
