In the past few weeks, queer people of color (QPOC) have taken to the streets to protest the wrongful murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd by white supremacists and the police. As protesters, we are not only exposing ourselves to tear gas and rubber bullets, but to COVID-19, a virus that’s still putting folks in the hospital.
These risks are further complicated by those of us who have weakened or compromised immune systems. The experiences of immunocompromised QPOC are diverse. Each one of us has a different story as to why we have a weakened immune system. One can be born with it, or get it later on in life. We may have a weakened immune system because of a chronic illness like HIV, diabetes, asthma or because of a medication we are taking. There are many ways to have a ‘compromised’ immune system, and many ways to protect and support our immune systems.
Join us on virtually on June 24th at 6 PM to discuss the complexities of being immunocompromised and a queer person of color while protesting and navigating life during the COVID-19 era. This event is one of many this year around promoting the well being and vitality of QPOC communities in Austin, TX.
