SUMMARY:Untangling Masculinity
DESCRIPTION:Masculine folks often struggle under the pressure to conform to unrealistic gender expectations. We are instructed to both internalize and externalize these unattainable expectations in violent behaviors that we turn towards ourselves and others such as domestic abuse and suicide. In an unsurprising but little known plot twist\, the lineage of toxic masculinity can easily be traced back to the onset of colonialism. Pre-colonial societies were abundant with gender variance and reverence for gender nonconformity\, which made space for folks to exist exactly as they are and allowed for a wider range of possibilities for masculine folks. So as we work to decolonize our internal narratives\, rewriting the script on masculinity will be crucial to unlocking a healthier world for generations to come. Join us as we explore questions such as\, “When is my masculinity just internalized white supremacy?” and “How do I know my masculinity is affecting my health?” \nMeet the Facilitator! \nKanoa Kau Arteaga is a transmasculine person originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. His entry to social justice and movement work is greatly informed by his time spent as a community organizer in Texas. They moved to Austin in 2012 and founded two organizations aimed at uplifting the lives of queer and trans people of color: LEADATX\, an anti-racist reading and discussion group\, and Queer Qumbia\, a monthly QTPOC dance party. He was closely mentored by local queer and trans elders who taught them the importance of centering the experiences and leadership of those most deeply impacted by the issues at hand. When he’s not doting over his fur babies he’s on Duolingo learning a new language or just generally loving being an Instagram husband™.
