Disability as an Identity

October 29 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Join us to celebrate Disability Awareness Month on October 29th at 6:30 PM to discuss disabilities and how it relates to us as QPOC and our relationships, sexual or otherwise!

Disability is a complex identity to hold. Any disability can take up a very large portion of one’s life, yet there are very few opportunities to talk about it. As a result, many people often fear expressing their needs and feel pressured to perform as able-bodied. For others, the question lies in whether or not they “count” as disabled because their condition is invisible or they may feel their suffering is not enough. Regardless of the disability, there is a lot of stigma surrounding the identity, which can make embracing part of one’s self a very difficult journey. At this event, we will break down some of the stigmas that affect our relationships, our access to resources, and our well-being as a whole. We will be given space to share our experiences, discuss what it means to be disabled, and learn about the power that comes with it.

Meet the Facilitator!

Renee is an Arab, non-binary, and disabled advocate who is dedicated to disability issues and destigmatizing mental health. They have spent the past four years working in direct care, mental health intervention, and habilitation. Renee works in direct care to this day, now working alongside adults with disabilities in order to actualize their goals and support their progress.

Renee did not learn of their own disability until February 2019, in which they began a long medical process in handling a chronic illness. Seeking support, they searched to find a queer-friendly disability community, but unfortunately found none. And so, they kickstarted Chronically Queer, Austin’s first LGBTQIA+ disability community. Renee’s work in Chronically Queer has brought to Austin monthly accessible socials, queer-friendly medical and disability resource guides, an active online disability forum, education on disability issues, and most importantly, community for queer folx with disabilities.
