PROMISED LAND is the story of one queer Latino boy’s search for love, liberation, and a working toilet in the Tennessee woods. After years spent looking for romance in the wilderness of San Francisco, Austin performer Rudy Ramirez traveled to Radical Fairyland, a haven for the queerest of the queer in the Appalachian mountains. The next 24 hours changed his life forever. Now he’s taking audiences with him (don’t worry, it’s only an hour this time). to experience the vegan pot pie dinners, radical queer ninjas, freezing cabins, mountains covered in vanilla frosting, a store called Gay Identities ‘r’ Us, and, most terrifying of all, outhouses. It’s a story of finding yourself–and maybe even someone to make out with–in the most unlikely of places.
RUDY RAMIREZ is a writer, performer, and director living in Austin, Texas. After getting his start at Camp Camp Queer Performance, he became a founding member of Spike Gillespie’s The Dick Monologues (2007-2009), playing to sold out houses in Austin and Dallas, and served as director for the show after the first year. His performance at 5 Things Austin got him an invite for their anniversary show in Sept 2009. He is the co-writer with Laura Freeman of the musical Luna Tart Died (2008), and has created performance pieces for The Rhizome Collective, Radical Encuentro, and most recently The Austin Bike Zoo, creating and directing Wheels of Wonderland (2009), which Russ Hartman of AustinDaze called, “a great representation of why I love this town . . . a production of shining creativity.” As an actor, he has worked with humdrum collective and is a member of The Vortex Company. Ryan Johnson of Austin.com says, “when he’s on stage, he steals the show . . . with the audience enjoying every minute of it.” PROMISED LAND is his first full length one-man show.
