Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos

Monday, November 16th, 2009

On November 1, 2009 allgo held our annual Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos celebration. This annual celebration offers not only a space to honor those who have gone before, we also open the space to honor the many ways in which queer people of color are impacted by our particular experiences in the world. The process of honoring our loved ones, our ancestors and our lives creates moments of celebration and healing for queer people of color and for our communities. This year’s celebration included a number of beautiful alters that were built by community members, poetry read by Matt Richardson and Kim Curette, and a solo performance by JJ Lara. All who came were invited to place a stone on allgo’s alter and share themselves and their recognition of the people who have and continue to impact our lives.

To hear about allgo’s celebration, please listen to Rose Pulliam and Priscilla Hale’s interview on Ancient Medicine Today.

Thank you to all who built alters and came to share in this beautiful celebration.

Raymond and Tagbo met when they were eight years old. Although from radically different worlds - Raymond/Rag is from a single parent West Indian home, while Tagbo/Tag is the only son of middle class Nigerian parents - they remain inseparable until the cusp of their teens, when Social Services find out about Rag’s mother’s absence, and take him to live with his grandmother in Birmingham. Ten years later, Rag returns to find Tag. While some things have changed completely, others haven’t at all. Rag and Tag still want to be together.
